Management students of Wigan & Leigh College held a strike on Wednesday, November 29th, in the college premises by boycotting the classes. They were agitated and upset about the misleading course they are pursuing. According to the students of the current batch, the management had fooled them to pursue PGDBE (Post Graduate Diploma in Business Economics) course than PGDBM (Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management), for which they had enrolled themselves. The students feel that their investment of lakhs of rupees has gone down the drain by getting admission in WLC. They want only to pursue the PGDBM course, which is a Degree. They believe that in India the Diploma will not be recognized and they cannot get a decent placement after course completion. According to the Centre Head, Mr. Verma, “It was not a strike but confusion”. The issue is not about the degree or the diploma recognition but the contents of PGDBE. Earlier to the strike, the students had communicated with Ms. Malobika Sen Gupta, CEO, WLC, on the internet for the same concern. She replied that PGDBE is the latest curriculum approved by the WLC, UK. According to the faculty member of the local college, they have agreed to incorporate the two courses. The students were not available for any comments. Mr. Verma further said, “The students were well aware of the course and its recognition during enrollment. Yet they want a written clarification about it”. The PGDBE course is what the industry wants globally. Placements after course completion are the main concern of students who manage to enter such professional institutes. But the management has organised campus interviews with companies like Info media and Karvy. In some cases students are short listed and sent to companies for interviews. What follows simply depends on their individual capabilities.Classes resumed in the college today.
